USE OF THE EXCELSYS COOLX1800

IN A BODY-FLOATING DEVICE

– TECHNICAL PROJECT REPORT –

For a customer in the medical technology sector, VITEC Power has implemented a high-performance and highly safe power supply solution for an innovative body-floating device. This application places exceptionally high demands on electrical safety, modular design, and reliable continuous operation.

PROJECT REQUIREMENTS

The device is used in advanced patient care and therefore requires a power supply that meets both medical safety standards and high performance levels.

Key requirements included:

  • Provision of at least 1800 W total power

  • Very high isolation voltages (MOPP) to ensure patient and operator protection

  • Modular architecture to provide multiple regulated output voltages

  • High reliability and stability for use in demanding environments

  • High isolation voltage not only to the primary side but also between individual outputs and modules

The last point presented a particular challenge: while many medical power supplies meet the stringent primary-side isolation requirements according to IEC 60601-1, they often offer only low isolation between the individually configurable outputs. Typical modular power supplies on the market provide only around 250–500 V of isolation between outputs — insufficient for this application.

TECHNICAL SOLUTION BY VITEC POWER

To meet these requirements, the Excelsys CoolX1800 from Advanced Energy was selected — a configurable, modular AC/DC power supply designed specifically for safety-critical applications.

The platform offers:

  • Up to 1800 W total output power

  • Up to 6 configurable slots for different output modules

  • Medical approvals according to IEC 60601-1

  • High isolation for maximum patient safety (2× MOPP)

  • Uniquely high isolation between individual outputs — up to 1850 VAC as standard

  • High efficiency and robust thermal design

  • Flexible configuration without additional external DC/DC converters

The exceptionally high module-to-module isolation was a decisive factor in the selection. Unlike common power supply platforms that offer only limited isolation between outputs, the CoolX1800 provides up to 1850 VAC output-to-output isolation as a standard feature — a unique capability in this power class.

Thanks to the slot-based architecture, the required output voltages could be defined precisely, enabling efficient and space-optimized integration into the device.

PROJECT STATUS

The solution is currently in the prototyping and certification phase.
For subsequent series production, an annual demand of 200–500 units is expected.

TECHNICAL PROJECT EXPERIENCE

The CoolX1800 has proven to be an ideal platform for complex medical systems. Thanks to its high isolation capability, modular architecture, and existing medical approvals, VITEC Power was able to fully meet both the technical and regulatory requirements — without the need to develop additional custom power supplies.

The project clearly demonstrates how configurable power supply systems can help reduce development time while fulfilling the highest requirements for safety, flexibility, and reliability.
